Catholic teaching on gender

The Catholic Church teaches that every person is created in the image and likeness of God, and is deeply loved by Him. This foundational belief calls the Church to treat all people, including those who identify as transgender, with compassion, respect, and sensitivity.

While the Church holds that our biological sex is a gift from God and part of His divine plan, it also recognizes the real struggles some individuals face with gender identity. In response, the Church invites a pastoral approach rooted in listening, accompaniment, and care, rather than judgment. The goal is to walk with each person on their journey, affirming their dignity and helping them discover their identity as beloved sons and daughters of God.
